About a month ago, NC Now, the UNC-TV program, filmed a segment on the Glencoe Mill village:

The bit about Glencoe starts at 14:35, if you want to cut straight to it. The segment emphasizes how far the village rehabilitation has come since it was first started by PNC and the adventurous homeowners. I’ve heard many stories from residents, and the visuals are a powerful reminder of what was. It was also fun to see our friend, Lynn Pownell, in her new studio too!
Wonderful clip! The before and after images are incredible. Looks like theses folks made a good investment. Thanks for posting this!
I was there in 1997. Returned for the first time to today and was absolutely amazed at the restoration of the mill houses, many of which seemed absolutely hopeless. I was absolutely delighted that no vinyl siding or windows were anywhere to be seen. . . but those new streetlamps looked absurdly inappropriate and lent an incongruous “theme-park” air to these 1880s streets. Yikes! Were it up to me, the lamps would be removed, as would the asphalt street paving. I’d prefer to see your funds spent on restoration of the mill and reconstruction of missing structures such as the original schoolhouse, rather than further compromising the time capsule feel of the village with hokey, non-authentic fixtures.
