We are so excited about the opening of Great Bend Park! It appears that Great Bend will be a popular place, between the trails, picnic and fishing opportunities. This project has indeed been a great example of cooperation between many partners, and I think the relationships that have been built at Great Bend will carry over to the furtherance of the Haw River/NC Mountains-to-Sea Trail in Alamance County.
Great Bend is also a stop on the NC Birding Trail. You can check out http://www.ncbirdingtrail.org/ to learn more. I think it would be neat to have some websapce for Great Bend visitors to log what avian species they observe at the park. I was out there this past Sunday and saw a beautiful osprey. He was visible from the island across the river. I saw him again yesterday down by the Carolina Mill. Maybe through this site you could post the birds you see.
